We Met to Talk About our Sunday School
Earlier in the spring, we had a meeting to discuss the Sunday School and Christian Education ministries of our church. At that meeting, a group of us agreed to read the book Sacred Challenge: Blazing a New Path for the Sunday School of the Future. After giving everyone a couple of months to read the book, we met again on Monday night July 9th to discuss what we might glean from the material contained in the book. The persons present at this meeting were: Derrill and Linda Douthat, Norma Davis, Rita Pauley, and Reverend Goodman.
At this meeting we discussed various ideas found within the book and we agreed on the following course of action:
1. Reverend Goodman will develop a resource to give to all teachers to help them better understand some of the things that they can do to better connect with their students and make their class a more caring place.
In addition, we agreed that the Council on Ministries needs to explore in more depth the following issues related to our Christian Education ministries:
1. Why do we have Sunday School at Virginia Avenue UMC? What is the purpose or goal of providing this ministry?
2. We need to talk with young adult families and ask them, “Why do you not attend Sunday School and bring your children to Sunday School?”
3. We need to take better care of our teachers, especially in the Children’s Division.
4. How do we get persons who have the Spiritual gift of teaching to recognize their gift and utilize it in the Christian Education ministries of our church?
